The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like standard biological terror, but beneath Together resides a intense examination about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The narrative commences when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the country for her career. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that arise in any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
