A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose term ended the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in total adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
